A “revolution in attitude” is what ex-Vogue editor Charty Durrant says is required to fight back against the trend-led shoppers. Charty was speaking on a panel at Esthetica’s press day which was held last week at Somerset House. She was joined by Baroness Lola Young, model Laura Bailey, Grazia fashion editor Melanie Ricky and others to discuss the ins and outs of bringing sustainable brands into the retail market.
All agreed it’s a must to sow the seeds of sustainable fashion awareness among the teenage demographic (teens being the group most likely to get lured by the temptations of throwaway fashion). The joy of choosing pieces of lasting beauty over a jumble of items that literally fall apart at the seams was also raised as a key point in the debate of how to educate consumers to quit shopping for the sake of shopping.
And, whilst there were some enviable high-end ethical labels on show it wasn’t all about hefty price tags. The number of labels who are fair trade, eco-friendly, upcycled etc…and affordable are on the rise.
Personal favourite. These pretty tiered skirts from Lu Flux made from scraps of salvaged fabrics.

Over 500 million people in 85 countries are expected to celebrate Earth Day on Saturday.
What’s it all about? Organisers say their aim is to bring together the planet’s population to “promote a healthy environment and a peaceful, just, sustainable world.”
What’s on near you?
Well, if you’re in London there’s a Eco-Festival on at the Millennium Dome with “environmental band” Weapons of Sound who’ll be banging out their tunes on instruments made from recycled junk! Seriously, they’ll be making melodies from old gas pipes and shopping trolleys. In Washington, DC the likes of Sting, John Legend and The Roots will be serenading the crowds with more traditional instruments. Whilst other events around the globe include a car-free day in Sydney, mass tree plantings in Chile and the development of a National Charter for Environment and Sustainable Development in Morocco.
Earth Day 2010 Chair Denis Hayes says, “We are at a pivotal moment in history. Climate change has put our planet in greater peril than ever, but it also provides us with a great opportunity to build a green economy and a healthy world for ourselves and for our children.”
What can you do?
Visit the Earth Day site, join the network and commit an ‘Act of Green’.
We also love Aveda’s delicious organic French lavender scented 2010 Light The Way Earth Month Candle. Aveda are donating £12.76 of every £15 soy wax candle they sell to the Global Greengrants Fund (GGF). If all the candles are sold they will donate £7.7 million globally. The GGF provide grants for community-based water projects and helps grassroots organisations working for clean water, clean air, sustainable livelihoods and healthy communities around the world.
