Not trashy

The London Science Museum is holding a new exhibition to illustrate how technology can reduce throwaway fashion.

‘Trash Fashion: Designing out waste’ will showcase a range of garments that reduce fashion waste and it’s impact on the environment. These include 3D body scanning technology to create perfectly fitting knitwear, a jacket grown by bacteria that live on green tea, and stitch-free clothes that are cut, joined and patterned using laser technology.

The above pic shows upcoming Australian designer Donna Sgro’s work. Donna is one of the exhibitors who uses laser technology in the process of creating her collections.

The exhibition will run at the Wellcome Wing at the Science Museum, London, from June 2010 until February 2011.

Hooked on you

Posted by sally, June 23, 2010

Crochet is making a comeback this SS10. It turned up on Chanel’s ‘I’m about to frolic in the hay’ SS10 runway show. Whilst making more of a boho appearance over with Issey Miyake. Crochet is the French word for ‘hook’ and crocheting is all about pulling loops of yarn through other loops (with the assistance of the aforementioned hook). It creates that open weave that can test us on what to wear beneath our crocheted apparel to avoid exposing our intimates to the world. bibico have just added a pretty crochet cardi to their summer collection. Hand-made by fair trade producers in Nepal from local yarn this lovely piece works well with jeans for a casual summer look.

Bombs away!!!!

Posted by sally, June 22, 2010

It’s a technicoloured yarn assault. No really it is. We think it’s unlikely there are any anti-terrorism laws against knitting. And anyway, if there are they deserve to be broken. Clearly so does crafty Texan Magda Sayeg who came up with a new joyous reclaim-the-streets kind of activity. Yarn bombing, it’s creating leg-warmers for lamp posts, tea-cosies for telephone boxes and er balaclava’s for buses (how ambitious is that?!). Get your granny to teach you a few tricks and go guerrilla.

Tank tops for tanks

If you want to get involved. Here’s some stops on the yarn bomb trail…

Yanarchy; for yarnbombing in the UK. These cheeky chappies are based in Swansea. Artyarn will also help you get knitting. Magda Sayeg, aka PolyCotn, is the ‘Mother of Yarnbombing’. Find out more about her artistic exploits on her lovely blog Knittaplease (she’s just done something beautiful in Rome).

Penguin goes green, and red

Posted by sally, June 15, 2010

Congrats to Penguin, who have been ranked Number 11 in The Sunday Times Green List, an annual survey to find the companies at the cutting edge of improving corporate environmental performance. What’s put Penguin so near to the top?

  • All black & white titles are printed on Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper
  • They’ve got a 5 year partnership with The Woodland Trust to plant 40,000 trees at Penguin Wood in South Derbyshire
  • 100% recycled paper is used for all printing and photocopying at their Strand headquarters
  • They were in the top ten companies for waste recycling
  • All monitors are switched off at the end of the day and lights are controlled by motion sensors
  • They proved big changes can be made quickly when they reduced their carbon footprint by 19% between 2007 and 2009.

From where does all this green goodness spring? Penguin Chief Exec says it’s the employees, “being green is not a corporate mantra here, but a grassroots movement driven by our people who care about protecting the environment – so this is recognition of all their hard work and commitment.”

So it’s the people, people! Each penguin office around the world has it’s own green committee made up of volunteers who are passionate about reducing Penguin’s environmental impact, this is what they’ve made happen. Inspiring don’t you think?

They’re also getting behind the (RED) fight to help eliminate AIDS in Africa. May saw the launch of 10 Penguin Classic titles including Anna Karenina, Great Expectations, Dracula and The House of Mirth which will be special (RED) editions. 50% of Penguin’s profits from these editions goes to The Global Fund to help eliminate AIDS in Africa.
